How to Support Your Metabolism (Gently, Sustainably)

Sun setting low over the ocean horizon, warm light as a visual for gently and sustainably supporting your metabolism

In Part 1, we talked about what your metabolism actually is: not a switch you’re born with, but a fire you tend, one that touches your digestion, your thyroid, your mood, and your cycle all at once. If you haven't read that yet, start there. This piece is the natural next step, the how.

I want to say this clearly before we go any further: none of what follows is a list of rules to follow perfectly. It's an invitation to notice what your body is asking for, and to give it that, a little more often than not. Here are the shifts that have made the biggest difference for me and for the women I work with.

Eat Enough

This is the foundation, and it's the one most women get wrong without ever realizing it. So many of us have spent years eating far less than our bodies actually need, not out of any intention to restrict, but because that's simply what we were taught counted as healthy.

Here's the thing about undereating: your body will not release fat while it feels unsafe, and running on too little fuel reads as unsafe every time. If your intake has been low for a while, the answer isn't to jump to eating twice as much overnight. Increase gently and consistently, and let your body's warmth, energy, and sleep guide the pace.

Pair Protein With Your Carbohydrates

Every time you eat, try to include a quality carbohydrate alongside an animal protein. Carbohydrates raise blood sugar, protein has a steadying effect on it, and together they create a smooth, stable response instead of the spikes and crashes that leave you wired, then wiped out. Steady blood sugar is one of the most underrated tools for supporting your hormones, your sleep, and your mood, all at once.

Good carbohydrate choices include root vegetables like potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, and beets, ripe fruit, organic dairy, and easy-to-digest grains like white or jasmine rice, well-cooked oatmeal, and sourdough bread. Carbs aren't the enemy here, they're essential fuel for proper cell function, liver detoxification, thyroid health, muscle recovery, brain function, and honestly, just feeling like yourself.

Choose Stable Fats Over Fragile Ones

Not all fats behave the same way inside your body. Fats like sunflower, canola, corn, and soybean oil are chemically fragile, containing poly unsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). They break down easily when exposed to heat, light, and oxygen, which can create cellular stress and quietly suppress thyroid function over time. Saturated fats, like coconut oil, eggs, meat, and dairy such as butter, cream, and cheese, are far more stable, and stable fats support rather than tax your metabolism.

These fats do real work for you. They slow the absorption of carbohydrates, which helps keep blood sugar steady, they carry the fat soluble vitamins A, D, and K2, and compared to poly and mono unsaturated fats, they tend to be far less inflammatory in the body. They also support your liver, kidneys, and pancreas as they detoxify, and they help lower the endotoxin load in your gut. In general, saturated fats, natural sugars, mineral salt, and animal protein tend to support thyroid function, while processed foods, soy, vegetable oils, and excess grains, legumes, and nuts tend to work against it.

This doesn't mean fearing every almond or avocado. It simply means letting stable fats make up the majority of what you cook with and reach for.

Eat Breakfast Soon After Waking

Your body spends the whole night in a fasted state, quietly burning through its glucose stores. By morning, it's ready to be fed, not asked to wait even longer. Eating a real breakfast within the first half hour or so of waking, ideally that same carbohydrate and protein pairing, tells your body it's safe, and that the fire doesn't need to be dimmed to get through the day.

If mornings don't come with much appetite yet, that's common, and it tends to shift naturally as your metabolism finds more support. Certain herbs can help too, gently stimulating appetite and digestive enzymes so your body remembers how to want food first thing. If that's something you'd love guidance on, an Herbal Consultation is a lovely, focused place to start. No need to force it in the meantime, just keep offering your body the invitation.

Move in a Way That Supports You, Not Taxes You

Movement is a beautiful part of a healthy life, but not all movement affects the body the same way. Long, steady-state cardio, think hour-long runs or back-to-back cardio classes, can read to the body as chronic stress, which over time can slow the very metabolism you're trying to support. It's not alone either, endurance events, ongoing high stress, heavy pharmaceutical use, radiation exposure, and chronic under-sleeping all ask the same thing of your metabolism: slow down and conserve.

Strength training tends to be far gentler on the nervous system while still building lean muscle, which genuinely supports a healthy metabolism. If your energy, temperature, or cycle have been struggling, it's okay to take a season of rest from intense exercise altogether before building back up. Supporting your metabolism first will always make everything you do afterward more effective.

A Relationship, Not a Protocol

None of these shifts are about being perfect. They're small, repeatable ways of telling your body: you are safe here, you are supported here, you don't have to run on empty anymore. Start with whichever one feels most inviting this week, whether that's adding protein to breakfast or trading your seed oil for butter, and let the rest unfold from there.

This is the heart of what I mean by Nourish. Not a meal plan, not a list of foods to fear, but a daily practice of coming back into relationship with your own body, one warm, well fed day at a time.

If you're ready for support that's shaped around your own body specifically, I'd love to hold that space with you. An Herbal Consultation is a wonderful place to start if you already know what you're wanting support with, a personalized herbal ally and formula to work with right away. If you're craving something a little deeper, a Foundation Session gives us a full 90 minutes together to look at your nutrition, lifestyle, and herbal support as a whole, with a roadmap to take home. And if you're ready to fully commit to this relationship with your body over time, Root to Bloom, my four month signature container, walks you through it season by season. Whichever feels right, I'd be honored to be part of it.
